Abstract

The phonology of local languages in Indonesia has its own uniqueness, but faces the threat of extinction due to the dominance of the national language and globalization. This article discusses the phonological characteristics of several regional languages as well as the challenges in their preservation. Using a comparative descriptive method, this study shows that many regional languages have experienced phonological shifts due to language contact with Indonesian.
